Whether you’re new to Nashville or a long-time resident, here are the essential rules for surviving in Music City.
🏠 We’re All Neighbors
This is the South. We hold doors for each other here. We make eye contact and smile. Sometimes we even strike up conversations with strangers just because it’s nice. Don’t be afraid to connect with your neighbor! And expect to be called ma’am or sir regardless of your age.
😊 “Bless Your Heart” Is an Insult
If someone tells you, “Bless your heart,” you have just been burned. Please analyze your last few sentences to better understand where you went wrong.
🎵 We’re More Than Country Music
Classical, jazz, punk, folk, rock, rap: Nashville is home to any and all kinds of music. You don’t have to like country to enjoy our music. We’ve got something for everyone.
🌪️ Follow Nashville Severe Weather
We have erratic weather all year long, from tornados to floods to ice storms. Our local weather team, Nashville Severe Weather, posts minute-by-minute severe weather updates on X, the former Twitter, and Instagram. They’re lifesavers.
🚗 You’re Gonna Need a Car
Unfortunately, our public transit and sidewalk systems are lackluster, to say the least. We’re very car-dependent, and this is coming from someone who doesn’t drive for medical reasons. It’s possible, but it’s hard.
🏙️ We Don’t Go Downtown If We Can Help It
And when we do go Downtown, we don’t park anywhere that doesn’t clearly label pricing, and we check for road closures and major events that will make driving a nightmare. If we go to a honky-tonk, we hang out on the upper floors, where it’s quieter and less stressful.
😎 Leave Celebrities Alone
Sure, you might see Maren Morris at a restaurant or Nicole Kidman at Whole Foods, but don’t make a big deal about it. They’re people too, and deserve to live their lives in peace.
👋 It’s a Small Town
Yes, technically Nashville is a bustlin’ metropolis, but it feels like a small town. Everybody knows somebody you know. Gossip will likely land in the wrong ears, but also, a friend is always right around the corner.
