Depending on the time, downtown Nashville is a very different beast. During the day, you can explore works of cultural and historical significance, take walks on the plentiful sidewalks (one of the few areas with decent walkability), and stroll along the river. While downtown might be best known for its wild nightlife, it can be delightful to explore during the day.

Museums, Museums, Museums!
- Frist Art Museum’s gorgeous art deco building was originally the city’s post office, which opened in 1933. It’s home to rotating exhibits throughout the year. Children are always free, and the Martin ArtQuest room allows them to make their own masterpieces. Adult tickets are $15, and college students get in free Thursday nights.
- The National Museum of African American Music might be one of Nashville’s newest museums, but it’s also one of the best. It opened in 2021 and is the only museum in the nation focused solely on African American music. The museum hosts numerous events throughout the year. Every first Wednesday of the month is free.
- Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s iconic keyboard-shaped building is essential to downtown’s landscape, yet many locals rarely visit. You should! It has wonderful exhibits and community programs, and local kids and some adults can get free admission.
- The Tennessee State Museum is free for all and is a great way to learn more about the state’s history. A separate children’s room has lots of activities for kids. Afterward, go outside and explore Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, and make sure to listen to the bells play “Tennessee Waltz” on the hour.
