Your Daily Guide

G’mornin! City Cast editor Natalia Aldana here, filling in for Margaret 💖

The Catio Cat Lounge needs your help! The Nashville-based business gives rescue and stray cats a temporary home to meet adopters. But after a much-needed renovation, business slowed and the lounge is now running low on funds. Want to contribute? Donations are much appreciated, and if you’ve been eager to bring a new loved one into your life, all of their cats are spayed and neutered 😻

Three black cats enjoying an enrichment area in front of a large floor-to-ceiling window. One cat walks inside a large circular wooden exercise wheel, another perches on a tall multi-level cat tree wrapped in cascading artificial green vines, and a third sits at the base of the tree on a green grass mat. A wall-mounted wooden cat cube with cat-face-shaped cutout openings is visible on the left.

The Catio Cat Lounge is currently supporting at least 45 cats. (Margaret Kingsbury / City Cast Nashville)

Nashville Pedestrian Deaths Continue To Rise. Why?

🚸 Vision Zero Isn’t Working. What Needs To Change?

We’re in the final year of Nashville’s Vision Zero plan, which set a goal of zero fatalities on our roads. But pedestrian deaths are rising, bike lanes and traffic calming keep disappearing, and the forthcoming East Bank Boulevard is looking more and more like a highway. We sat down with Charlie Weingartner, chair of the Vision Zero Advisory Committee, to try and figure out what’s going on. [🎧 City Cast Nashville]

📰 Antioch Woman Recounts ICE Detainment

Despite being steps away from obtaining U.S. citizenship, Terez Metry was unexpectedly detained by ICE earlier this year and deported to Egypt, from which she fled when she was just a child. For a time, she was in the same detention center as Nashville journalist Estephany Rodriguez, and is continuing the fight to be reunited with her husband and rebuild her life. [Nashville Banner]

🏁 Amended Fairgrounds Referendum Filed

After a Davidson County Chancery Court on Friday delayed a referendum to ban auto racing and require affordable housing at the Nashville Fairgrounds — ruling that the charter amendment’s title “does not clearly express its subject” — the group seeking to place the referendum on November’s ballot quickly refiled the petition with a new title. It must now be re-approved by the Charter Revision Commission, and avoid any future legal challenges, before the group can begin collecting signatures. [Nashville Scene; Nashville Banner]

🪕 TN Lawmakers Reject Indie Venue, Artist Funding

During this year’s session, state lawmakers rejected the TN Live Music Support Act that would have provided $1 million annually to support independent music venues, promoters, and artists. The bill aimed to help local venues resist corporate takeover. Advocates of indie music say they may pursue private funding, or attempt future legislation. [WPLN]
