We’ve been getting a ton of rain lately, and though your garden might love it, you’re probably tired of flood warnings. (Turn around, don’t drown, folks.) Good news — you can do your part to protect your local watershed, reduce flood risk, and improve water quality!
🌧️ Those Pesky Storm Drains
Blocked storm drains cause flooding and pollute our waterways when it rains. It’s super easy to clean storm drains, though, and it’s a great way to contribute to your community’s safety and health!
🧹 Get Cleaning
- Do your part to prevent drain clogs by making sure you don’t blow leaves or debris into the street.
- Keep the lid on your trash can and bag up any stray trash to keep it out of the drains, too.
- Clean covered drains around your neighborhood or property by sweeping debris off of the top, bagging it, and disposing of it.
- Never attempt to move a storm drain grate or reach inside to retrieve anything. You can contact Metro Water Services at (615) 862-4600 to report a concern instead.
🪧 Adopt a Stream
The Metro Adopt-A-Stream program by the Cumberland River Compact lets your community group adopt a stream in Davidson County. You’ll need to organize at least one stream clean up per year, but in exchange you’ll get a nice sign acknowledging your group and your new favorite stream. The adoptions last for 2 years and Metro will provide supplies and trash removal — so it really couldn’t be any easier. It’s a great opportunity to make a difference with your church, school, or any other community you’re a part of.
