It’s spring cleaning time, and I don’t know about you, but I have a huge pile of stuff I need to donate. While spring cleaning can be overwhelming, it feels great to donate items to people who need them. Here’s my guide to Nashville-area nonprofits that accept donations.
- Proceeds from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore help build homes for locals in need. They accept furniture and home decor donations, and will pick up large or heavy items on the ground floor.
- ThriftSmart gives to several local charities, and accepts donations of all kinds: Clothes, furniture, toys, electronics, books, and pretty much everything else. You can schedule a free pickup for donations.
- Donate women’s and children’s clothes and accessories to the Madison nonprofit Pink Glitter Thrift Boutique, which helps support cancer patients.
- Ladies of Charity Nashville has seasonal sales of donated clothes and household items, which fund its emergency assistance office.
- The Arc will pick up donations of clothes, furniture, and household items to sell to Southern Thrift. Proceeds benefit Tennesseans with disabilities.
- TenThirtyFive in Donelson accepts donations of clothes and accessories. This nonprofit works with other community organizations to give clothes to young women.
YWCA is a nonprofit that empowers Nashville-area women and helps victims of domestic abuse. They accept donations on this list, including new or gently used bath towels, sheet sets, scrubs, and sneakers. For its Dress for Success program, they accept like-new women’s clothes and accessories.
If you have a pile of art and craft supplies, donate to Turnip Green Creative Reuse. They accept a wide range of materials, from traditional art supplies to odds and ends like wood scraps, flooring, remotes (!), and so much more. They offer free pickup.
Hands On Nashville promotes local volunteer opportunities and has a running list of items these organizations need.
This nonprofit helps our unhoused community, and accepts donations of household items like plates, laundry baskets, and cookware for welcome home kits.
Room In the Inn also helps Nashville’s unhoused folks. While they primarily accept new donations, they also take donations of reading glasses, books and magazines, playing cards, and backpacks.
People Loving Nashville gives gently used clothes to our unhoused neighbors. They have three drop-off locations: the Batman building, Five Daughters Bakery, and The Church at Woodbine.
If you have a pile of too-small children’s clothes, you can donate them to UniCycle, and the clothes will go to MNPS students. There are numerous drop-off locations, but schools only accept donations matching their dress code, so double-check that before making a drop-off.
This nonprofit helps support kids in foster care, and accepts donations of children’s clothes, toys, and gear.
Book’em accepts like-new children’s book donations, and gives books to local kids.
NPL accepts donations of gently used books, DVDs, board games, and even seeds. Stop by your local branch to donate.
