🏘️ OHS Under Fire … Again

This week, Nashville Scene reporter Eli Motycka broke the news that Office of Homeless Services Director April Calvin had created her own rehousing program outside of protocol. We’re chatting with Eli about it on today’s Friday news roundup. [🎧 City Cast Nashville]

👮 Almost 400 People Detained From Local Jails

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have detained 365 people from Davidson County jails this year, including 216 after May’s ICE operation in Nashville. While this type of enforcement also happened during Biden’s administration, it has increased under President Trump, and more people with minor, nonviolent offenses are being detained. 🏙️ Proposed Midtown District Change

On Nov. 4, Metro Council will consider a proposal to create a Midtown Business Improvement District, similar to arrangements in The Gulch and downtown. An additional fee on Midtown properties would fund improvements like cleaning services and safety measures. [Nashville Scene]

  • Earlier this year, I reported on how the Nashville Business District, which provides these services for downtown and The Gulch, has been criticized for its treatment of unhoused folk, and for improperly storing gas tanks in the library garage. [📰 Hey Nashville]

⚡ Disruption to Nashville’s Support Services

Due to the federal government shutdown, funding for several Metro emergency support programs — including assistance with rent, mortgage, property taxes, and prescriptions — will be limited. Utility Payment Assistance will be available to applicants who currently meet crisis criteria, but others will be placed on waiting lists. [Nashville.gov]

We are deeply concerned about the impact this will have on the families and individuals who rely on these essential services.
