Three dogs — one a brown doodle, one a white and black border collie, and one a black scruffy supermutt — stand on a pavement path in the middle of a dog park. The ground behind them is covered with hay.

A tired dog is a happy dog, and if you’re lucky enough to live with a pup, you know the difference a great dog park visit can make. My nine year-old supermutt Wally is quite the aficionado of Nashville’s many local dog park options. Here are his (and my) favorites. Check out our whole list on Overlook Maps!

The Disney World of Nashville dog parks features a paved walking loop that's a third of a mile in length, surrounding an open field with plenty of shade trees, boulders to sit on, and benches scattered throughout. There's also a picnic pavilion and a small wooded area. It’s easy to spend the whole morning here.

🏛️ Centennial

This is an oldie that's still a goodie. It’s extremely shaded in some areas and located on a hill, which can create some muddy adventures. With separate areas for large and small dogs, it’s a nice place to start or finish a leashed walk around the Parthenon nearby.

A black dog viewed from behind is trotting off-leash down a wooded path. His tail is straight up in the air and he looks very happy.

Wally loves a safely fenced-in, off-leash adventure! He also loves illegal off-leash adventures. Don’t tell anybody. (Whitney Pastorek / City Cast Nashville)

🌳 Pitts

Head to Antioch for this hidden gem, which also features a fenced-in wooded area with a trail that pups can bound down, unburdened by a leash. It’s a great place to work on recall, or train for a longer hike!

This is part of a new and well-designed public space in the heart of the city. It’s got an Astroturf surface, which can get hot in the sun, but shade is available, and there's plenty of water, picnic tables, and playground structures in the same park. Don’t tell your dog about the sand in the nearby beach volleyball court.

💦 Warner

There’s plenty of room to romp here, as it’s basically a field. The highlight of this park is its easy access to Edwin Warner Park, just to the south on Vaughn Road. To the left inside the entrance, you’ll find access to the Little Harpeth and a great spot for (leashed) dogs to splash in the creek.

🐕 Shelby

Located behind the Shelby Community Center, this park has a central seating area and a covered pavilion in the back. It’s our home dog park, and the community around it is what makes it great — plus it has easy access to all of Shelby Park and Bottoms down the neighboring greenway.
