Third spaces are places beyond home, school, and work where people can gather and socialize. While access to these spaces is essential for everyone, they’re especially vital for teenagers in managing their mental health and building strong, supportive peer networks.
Unfortunately, third spaces where teenagers can hang out in Nashville are dwindling. Opry Mills Mall has an anti-teen policy, and poor public transportation along with a lack of pedestrian-safe neighborhoods makes it even more difficult for teens to find places to hang out together. However, some organizations and businesses are stepping in to fill the gap. Here’s a list of third spaces where Nashville teens are welcome.
Nashville Public Library hosts numerous daily events for teens across all their branches, from Dungeons & Dragons meetups to film discussions and general teen hangouts. There’s really something for every teen, and it’s a great way to meet new friends with similar interests. Even when there’s not a specific event, library branches have rooms where only teens are allowed.
Most Nashville community centers host afternoon free open gyms, where only teens are allowed and can hang out and socialize in a safe space. See which one is closest to you, and check their schedule.
DRKMTTR is an all-ages music venue in East Nashville that aims to be “a hub for connectivity and creative collaboration.” While you do need to buy tickets for shows, this is a cool third space.
From an underground art studio to youth councils and bike workshops, the Oasis Center is a supportive and welcoming environment.
Many organizations accept teen volunteers. Teens can meet new people along the way, or invite their friends for a group volunteer hangout. Hands On Nashville is a great place to find opportunities. And hey, it also looks good on college applications!
The Belcourt hosts a free film club twice a month on Saturdays, which includes tickets to a movie, and discussion over snacks with other high schoolers. Make sure to register first.
The Green Hills and Margaret Maddox YMCAs have teen centers that offer numerous activities and opportunities to socialize. The Maddox Y also hosts a periodic “Late Night Pump” gym session for 17-25 year olds. Keep an eye on their socials for the next one!
